Black communities have continuously defined success beyond wealth or status. Success meant safety, dignity, education, freedom, and the ability to choose one’s own path.

Defining success for ourselves resisted limitation and reclaimed agency. It allowed people to measure life by values, not permission.

Self-definition remains an act of power.
